Gun Cleaning and Maintenance

Be it the fore-end or the stock; guns can get a real hard nut to clean if you ignore them for a long time. An unclean and ill-maintained gun is more than just some dirty firearm. It reflects on your lack of sincerity with the sport.

We’re sure you don’t want that. If you’re new to guns and stocks and rifles and patterns, you’ll find this blog very useful.
Knowing Where to Put Your Gun

You might not realize how the most harmless of places can end up causing harm to your gun. Even the finest security cabinets can cause tiny knocks and tears in the gun. If you use your gun regularly, you’re looking at small things passing from you onto the gun—aftershave, perspiration, etc. If you took the gun out in the rain or if the atmosphere of your storage is damp, the wood stock will suffer.

If that happens, go for a refinishing option. You can find a walnut refinishing option easily.

Old Knocks and Scars

If your gun is old (such as a pass-me-down) and displays knocks from days long gone, you might want to invest in a polyurethane lacquer. Steaming with a hot iron and then finishing with polyurethane lacquer can help you take care of dents.

Step-by-Step Gun Cleaning Guide

If you have undertaken the task of cleaning your gun at home, follow these steps:
  1. Start with the barrels and bores
  2. Look for fouling in the forcing cone and choke
  3. Inspect the tubes and the muzzle for wear and tear
  4. Look for dents
  5. Inspect the top rib
  6. Remove the multichoke and check for damages
  7. Clean the choke tube threads

What Happens When You Don’t Clean Your Gun?

A lot. You lose the gun’s consistency since it’s probably clogged and carpeted with a fine layer of dust in places that are hard to reach. Of course, you don’t have to clean your gun too often, either, because you begin to get a grip on a gun you’re regularly using. Of course, not a lot of us actually use our guns all that often, which is why it’s always best to focus on their cleanliness and maintenance. The gun will become dry, and you’ll face difficulties when you try to fire it.

Pro Tip: Get Something Walnut

Walnut is ideal—it’s the ultimate material for a gunstock if you’re serious about gun cleaning and maintenance. It’s resilient and will last you an extremely long time. It is most ideal for fore-ends and stocks. Walnut is also low-maintenance. And of course, it looks exquisite—beyond compare.

1 Would like a price on Marlin 39A gun stock field grade?

2 I would also like a rear stock for my CZ Ringe Neck Pheasent side by side 20 ga. double barrel, this gun was bought through bass pro in Clarksville Indiana. Special order was a single trigger and I assumed it to have a straight stock. I took this piece to the field and could not get lined up on Quail /bird flushs due to the fact all CZ side by sides are set up for right hand shooters from the factory which I didn't know when I was ordering it. I would like to know if you can build a replacement stock for it? this gun has false sideplates, not a box lock. I have had the stock steamed and tried to get it back straight, being left hand shooter I'm having problems getting on the birds when flushed. I don't need anything fancy in wood just field grade. Can you help me on this? and what kind of price? I want it inletted as the one on it presently
