Why Do Hunters Love Double Barrel Guns So Much?

Humans have been using weapons of all kinds to bring down animals and birds, and for some of us, double barrel guns aren’t that big a deal. It’s just something that brings down a pigeon, right?

Wrong.

For us outdoors men and hunting enthusiasts, guns are a league of their own. Our interest in guns exceeds that which is merely restricted to the utilitarian. Double barrel guns aren’t just some tool that go “pop.” They’re beautiful, efficient, precise machines that feel differently when we hold them in our arms.

We know that when it comes to barrels, two is better than one!
Two Guns in One

The only thing better than one shotgun . . . is two of them. And that’s exactly what a double barrel gun is. It has two:
  • Triggers
  • Firing mechanisms
  • Barrels
  • Finger pins
This means that if one of these features becomes damaged or breaks off, we’re still good. We still have the other one to help us out.

Less Action

Whether you’re trying to get your shot side-by-side or are instead of going over-under, you’ll have a harder time with a single barrel gun. We, with our double barrel shotguns, have a go at two quick, precise, successive shots without worrying too much about the action. The recoil is minimum and we don’t have to bother too much about it. Taking a second shot takes only a little time.

Compact and Handy

Double barrel guns are short, compact, and portable. We can use them from wherever we like: from trees and bushes or even in heavy cover. They balance well and are quick to close in on a target. All of this makes a double barrel gun easier to handle. They also have great pointability, almost like that of a shotgun and less like a rifle. In unsavoury situations, this could mean life or death—such as an angry animal charging at you.

Some Call Us Snobs.

We Don’t MindYou must have heard someone saying that people who shoot pheasants only with double barrel shotguns are “elitist” or snobs. Well, so be it. Does it indicate some deep-lying upland snobbery within us? Maybe. Does it mean that it’s bad for the sport? Definitely not.

Double barrel guns are admired because they provide precision, balance, ease, are shootable, have great pointability, and they feel great in your hands! Our love for double barrel guns might be special, but it isn’t unsubstantiated.

Howdy. Looking for a walnut, straight hand (English) stock for a Remington 870 in .410 bore. Standard factory dimensions. Do you have such a critter? FYI, i understand the .410 bore Mod 870 is built on a 20-Ga frame. Many thanks for your help!
